Even Elmo has an iPhone

By | Gossip Genie Blog, What's Trending | No Comments

Today isn’t “Throwback Thursday” but nevertheless, I am feeling nostalgic ever since watching this new Internet Explorer commercial.
[embedplusvideo height=”315″ width=”560″ standard=”http://www.youtube.com/v/qkM6RJf15cg?fs=1″ vars=”ytid=qkM6RJf15cg&width=560&height=315&start=&stop=&rs=w&hd=0&autoplay=0&react=1&chapters=&notes=” id=”ep7027″ /]

It is incredible to think about the way things used to be versus the way they are now. For me, a Talkboy or a Yak Bak provided me with hours of endless entertainment. Unfortunately, there is no longer a market for those types of devices because instead, “There’s an app for that.” Today’s generation automatically assumes that every screen is a touch screen. Most children have an iTouch, iPhone or an iPad by the age of 5. While you won’t see 5 year olds surfing Facebook, there are plenty of applications developed for the toddler market.

My adorable 7 month old nephew is obsessed with Elmo. Today, you can go beyond just watching Elmo on TV and reading his books. At the suggestion of my best friend, I downloaded an app where you can actually FaceTime with Elmo.

Creative Resumes That Stand Out

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media, What's Trending | No Comments

When applying to jobs, you’re always looking for that special something that will help you stand out to potential employers. Whether it’s a perfectly worded cover letter or a creative resume design, you have to do something to stand out in the current job market.

Phillippe Dubost, a Paris-based product manager, upstaged us all by turning his resume into an Amazon.com product page and it’s gone viral, resulting in over 100 job offers from various companies.

Phillippe’s not the only one to get creative when it comes to applying to a job.

Eric Ghandi created his resume to look like Google-page. He uploaded it to his LinkedIn page and was contacted by Google directly about applying for a position.

Sabrina Saccoccio modeled her resume after a Facebook profile page.

She even included wall comments.

It’s a tough job market and people will do anything they can to stand out. But does it pay to be creative? I guess it depends on where you’re applying. Just as you wouldn’t wear jeans to an interview, your resume needs to match the part. But it never hurts to get creative. It could be the thing that sets you apart from everyone else!

What’s the most creative you’ve gotten with your resume or cover letter when applying for a job?

Less Graphic with Graph Search

By | Gossip Genie Blog, What Not to Post | No Comments

Recently, my blog posts have been a lot more personal than they used to be. Being authentic and open is important to me because that is the driving force behind social media. Raw conversation is so valuable. Yesterday, Graph Search was installed on my Facebook account. It is a very promising feature but to my team it’s a bit disappointing.  Graph search eliminates the option of searching by keywords friends or public accounts have used in posts and status updates. This is how we crafted many of our “What not to post” blog posts. We searched for keywords such as vomit, poop, diarrhea and Facebook would populate a list of people that have used those words in status updates thus providing us with the best fodder for blog posts. Maybe it’s time for us to grow up and mature out of the potty humor that fueled our blog for so long.

On that note, I will share a little story with you that I discovered via a friend sharing this gem on Facebook – it trumps any what not to post blog post by far.

The title pretty much sums up the story –

Are You Sitting Right Now? Then Read This.

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Words of Advice | No Comments

Chances are, if you’re reading this, you’re sitting down. You may be at work or at home on the couch and if these few minutes it takes you to read this blog post are just a small portion of your eight hour sedentary work day, you are 54% more likely to die of a heart attack.

Okay, that was a bit solemn but most of us are unable to avoid this workplace set up. However, there are a few ways you can improve your conditions! Before I give you my suggestions, take a look at this infographic created by MedicalBillingandCoding.org. If you’re like me, you may find yourself unconsciously beginning to stand up as you read…

SittingAtWork

Scary right? Check out these tips and try to start changing your sitting lifestyle while we’re still young!

1. Take a break each hour. Whether that be to go get a beverage or for a bathroom break, come back and stretch out your body. A European Heart Journal study of 5,000 men and women found that the quarter who took the most breaks during the day were 1.6 inches thinner than the quarter who took the least.

2. Stand during client/conference calls. A 130 pound person burns about 70 calories an hour just by standing. 30 minute conference call? You’ve already burned off part of that cookie you ate for lunch.

3. If you work in a large office, don’t spend more than 15 minutes crafting an email for an employee. Walk over to their office and tell them. Chances are, your communication will be clearer and faster!

4. If the weather is cooperating, use half of your lunch break to take a walk outside. The fresh air will help clear your brain anyway!

5. Purchase a way cooler office chair. Mashable posted these “5 Alternative Office Chairs” that are quite inspiring. My personal fave? The Balance Ball Chair. Work + Core Strengthening = The Ultimate Multitask.

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media, What's Trending | No Comments

According to Twitter, there were 1.1 million tweets sent out during President Barack Obama’s Inaugaration Ceremony this morning beating the 82,392 tweets sent out during his 2009 inauguration.

Live Tweeting

President Obama has continually embraced social media throughout his presidency and election campaign, hosting chats on Twitter and Google+ hangouts to address citizen’s concerns and answer questions. The inauguration was no different. Under a new media team, the White House (@whitehouse) embraced social media, live tweeting the ceremony. They sent the best quotes from Obama’s Inaugural Speech as well as images of the ceremony.

Making History

Obama made history when he became the first president to mention gay rights in an inaugural address. In his speech, he said, “It is now our generation’s task to carry on what those pioneers began. For our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts. Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law, for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well.”

Digital Dreams

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media | No Comments

There is never a time that I am disconnected. If I wake up in the middle of the night to get a glass of water, I will inevitably check my email, Facebook feed, Twitter feed and now Instagram as well. I recently purchased Touch Screen gloves because I can’t handle not being able to check my phone when my gloves are on. I would choose frostbite over being disconnected. You might say the only time I am disconnected is when I am sleeping but that’s actually not the case…I have digital dreams!

I have had many Facebook related dreams – usually it’s indirect but easily attributable – like  a dream about a person that I haven’t seen in 10 years but recently connected with on Facebook. I have had Twitter dreams – I am trying to tweet but my keyboard is broken – like running in a dream and your legs give out. I have many client related social media dreams that incorporate the various networks.

Last night, I had my first Instagram dream.

About 4 months ago, I sold my one bedroom condo and all the furniture in it. It was my first place after college and I have many fond memories of it. Since moving over a year ago , I haven’t really looked back because I love my new place. Apparently, my subconscious is still mourning the loss of my bachelorette pad. In my dream, I was on my phone scrolling through my Instagram feed and every picture in that feed was of my old condo filled with people I had never seen before sitting on my furniture and smiling. It’s strange because in my dream, I felt nostalgic and somewhat sentimental about all of the happy memories I have from that place. Rather than just dreaming about being back in my old place, I am dreaming about seeing pictures of it on Instagram. I guess I should make my dreams come true and Instagram the pictures of my old condo below…

What Not To Post: Your Illegal Activity

By | Gossip Genie Blog, What Not to Post | No Comments

Even police departments are using social media to catch criminals!

Jacob Cox-Brown, a teenager from Astoria, Oregon, was arrested for a hit-and-run after posting on his Facebook page about the incident. His post, pictured above, has to be one of the biggest, or at least the most stupid, gaffes I’ve ever seen on Facebook.

Two officers responded to a report at 1am of a hit-and-run that left a white Scion and adjacent vehicles damaged in their parking spots. With no clues as to who hit the parked cars, the officers finally caught a lead via social media.

Police were tipped off after two of Cox-Brown’s Facebook friends privately messaged an Astoria Police Officer. The police department and its officers “have an active social media presence,” according to a press release from the department. They said, “It was a private Facebook message to one of our officers that got this case moving, though. When you post … on Facebook, you have to figure that it is not going to stay private long. We actually use Facebook to find things not unlike this.”

Your facebook posts can get you in trouble with a significant other, a friend, or even a family member, but you know it’s bad when what you post on Facebook is getting you in trouble with the law. Don’t drink and drive…or post on Facebook!

2012 Social Media Blunders

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media, What Not to Post | No Comments

Some of the best social media blunders of 2012 have been circulating around lately and I figured it would be best to share these so that you can prevent this from happening to your business page! If you use a platform like Hootsuite, Tweetdeck or Sprout Social, make sure you are posting content to the correct account beforehand. Many big companies have had interns handling their accounts and these mishaps arrive from a lack of double checking before posting. Also, be sure to check what a trend is referring to before joining in on it. In addition to trends, if you’re going to start your own trend, think about the feedback you will receive, negative and positive. Adjust your chosen trend in accordance with what will receive the least negative feedback.

1. McDonald’s

McDonald’s asked customers to use the Twitter hashtag #mcdstories to share their experiences of dining at the company’s restaurants. They didn’t realize they would be faced with an army of Twitter users criticising the franchise’s bad quality food, treatment of animals, and poor customer service.

2. Celeb Boutique

Following the 2012 cinema shooting massacre in Aurora, Colorado, Celeb Boutique misjudged the meaning behind the Twitter trend #Aurora.

3. Susan Boyle

Combining words or phrases to make a single compound word to use in a Twitter hashtag has the potential for damaging results.

4. KitchenAid

A team member in charge of KitchenAid’s Twitter account posted a message about the president and his grandma.
The tweet was quickly removed and KitchenAid’s director of marketing issued an apology claiming one of the company’s staff had accidentally posted the ‘joke’ publicly rather than privately. The tweet had already gone viral.

5. American Apparel

Social media promotions and national disasters don’t always mix. American Apparel sent out the message that customers in US states facing the Hurricane Sandy could enjoy a 20% on their shopping in case they were ‘bored’ during the storm.

Defining Success

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media | No Comments

Success- what does it mean? It means different things to different people. Attaining an unpaid internship that requires you to retrieve coffee for your superiors could be considered a success. Being elected the president could be considered a success. If you stay married for 20 years most people would say that is a successful marriage. Success is all about how you view yourself. Everyone defines success a little differently. Success and happiness do not necessarily go hand in hand but I think if you figure out what your definition of success is, when you achieve it, you will be happy. Maybe being happy is your definition of success. Success to me is loving what I do because what I do is my livelihood. What I do is not just a job, it’s not something I view as a 9 – 5 commitment, it’s what I live and breathe. I believe that with that mentality comes success and happiness.

Don’t get me wrong, not every single day of my life is a social media carnival of rainbowlicious fun and excitement, there are days when I am exhausted and feeling uncreative but thankfully, I have a team to lean on during those days the planets don’t align for me. Success is also a product of believing in yourself. I am not trying to write a self-help blog but if you believe in what you do, it’s obvious. If you have ever heard me discuss what Gossip Genie can do for a company, I know you will see it because I feel it, it’s a an unparalleled energy, it’s passion.

In 2013, we plan to grow Gossip Genie quite a bit which means we plan to help businesses succeed through social media. Our goal is to increase revenue for our clients, it’s a bit different than your traditional marketing plan. Therefore, if you are interested in joining our team, please send your resume and cover letter to info@gossipgenie.com – remember to always PDF your resume.
