The End of the World

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media, What's Trending | No Comments

Churchgoers, today is supposedly your last day of church FOREVER! According to a group of Christian activists, the end of the world is next Saturday, May 21st. Therefore, Sunday church services will no longer be held due to the world ending.

It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall at one of these “final” church services that are preaching their May 21st apocalypse theory. I probably know more about the prophecy than I would prefer to because of “the news finding me” via social media. Facebook and Twitter have been abuzz with tweets like: Here are the devoted believers expressing themselves on Facebook:One of the many different Facebook pages promoting the end of the world as May 21, 2o11 – It has 12K+ followers I should target all of these people and sell my “rapture pets left behind” daycare services…

I can’t say that was my idea, I actually read a story about a man that was making a mini-fortune off a company he started, Eternal Earth-Bound Pets – check it out here, you can also follow them on Twitter if you are interesting in using their services – please do not ready my blog because you are an idiot!

Harold Camping – a major preacher of the May 21st rapture absolutely guarantees that the world will end on May 21st – (he is 89 years old, so we can’t be sure that he’s simply referring to his world). However, this will be his second prophecy that the world will end on a specific date, the first prediction of the end was for September 1994 and that was a major #FAIL.

It’s frustrating to when people say that Facebook is not a suitable platform to market a B2B. I think that Facebook may be the best platform for building business to business relationships. With the introduction of “page posts,” (as a page you can post on the walls of other pages) cold calling is no longer the most effective way of generating leads.

Imagine that you’re a salesperson for a company and you’re sick of sending emails that get lost in cyberspace, leaving messages that will never be returned and knowing that caller id is preventing you from getting in touch with prospective clients. If you haven’t already, make sure your B2B business has a Facebook page, from there, JOIN THE CONVERSATION. Facebook is all about making connections so do it! Once your company has its own page, become the brand advocate and target your clients.

Also, strengthen your connections, show a little love (client appreciation) by mentioning your clients in your Facebook posts like Kernel Seasons did for Harkins:

If you’re not already engaging in this type of social networking, your competition probably is.

Viral Virus

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media | No Comments

We’ve all done it, it’s embarrassing, a prime example of “curiosity killing the cat.” I am talking about clicking on those oh so intriguing Facebook posts that indicate one of your friends has “liked a link.”

Your perversion gets the best of you and you click on it which results in you liking this same “link” which then becomes your status and the entire process starts all over again. In a way, it’s like someone that does not disclose the fact that they have an STD, similar to this “link” both are viruses that blindside their victims and can prove to be difficult to get rid of. This is a friend of mine that claims to have “accidentally” clicked on this link. We all know that’s not the case but he’s been tortured enough, especially because he never got to see the outcome of “Father walks in oh his own daughter.”

Here’s another one There was no amazing effect behind this link, other than the fact that this girl was stuck with this picture defining her status for all of her friends to see.

The worst virus on Facebook has to be the one that EVERYONE falls for, “click here to see who viewed your profile.” Just a little tidbit of advice, unless your name is Mark Zuckerberg, YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO SEE WHO VIEWED YOUR PROFILE. This particular virus randomly posts on your friend’s pages which is like your very own virtual idiot stamp.

Osama Bin Laden found in Abbottabad is Notta Bad for Social Media.

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media, What's Trending | No Comments

Where were you when JFK died? Where were you when the World Trade Centers collapsed? And now another memorable one for Americans, where were you when you found out Osama had been captured & killed? It used to be that we would find out from a friend watching the news or overhear someone talking about it. Now thanks to Twitter & Facebook, it is safe to say this is where most people will remember hearing about the significant moments in history. Below are some statistics that can give you a better understanding on what was happening on the Internet that fateful Sunday night.

-From a poll posted on, 31% found out about Osama’s death on Twitter and 20% found out on Facebook.; both mediums beating out T.V., text, and other sources.

-12.4 million tweets about Bin Laden were sent out per HOUR. And 3,000 tweets were sent out per SECOND between the hours of 10:45 p.m. and 2:20 a.m. ET.

-Foursquare users are creating check-ins like “Osama’s Grave.” Also, an Osama joke has already been circulating: “Looks like Osama Bin Laden signed up for Foursquare on the wrong day.“

-There are currently over 474,000 “Likes” for the Facebook page “Osama Bin Laden is Dead” and has increased by 167 since I began writing this post.

-There were over 13,000 videos uploaded to YouTube-mostly of reporters as well as cities where huge celebrations were taking places.

-“Bin Laden” searches on Google were up 1 Million percent on Sunday night.

-13 Minutes elapsed Sunday night between the first tweet credited with breaking the news of Osama bin Laden’s death, and the change to his online Wikipedia entry reflecting that he had died.

Chicago Interactive Marketing Association (CIMA): Reaching the Hispanic

Population Online

National Brand Leaders in Chicago Discuss Multicultural Marketing Strategies

CHICAGO – April 27, 2011 – The U.S. Hispanic market represented an estimated purchasing power of $1 trillion in 2010, a figure that is expected to grow to $1.5 trillion in 2015. According to a March 2011 report released by the U.S Census Bureau, U.S. Hispanics now represent the nation’s largest minority, surpassing the 50 million mark and growing at unprecedented rates. This audience is indisputably a critical segment of companies’ core consumer base, but how are marketers reaching and engaging with this important audience in the ever important online, digital space?

The Chicago Interactive Marketing Association (CIMA) will help answer this question in its upcoming event, “The Census is In: Is Your Brand Ready?” taking place on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 11:15 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza (350 W. Mart Center Drive, 14th Floor). Open to all business professionals in the Chicagoland area, the event will include a networking reception and a sit down lunch with a registration fee of $40 for CIMA members and $60 for nonmembers. Special group rates are available.

The event will feature a panel of industry experts including, Joe Kutchera, Director of Digital Services at Acento Advertising; Megan Dawson, Associate Marketing Manager at AllState; Oscar Castro, Director and General Manager of International eCommerce at Sears and Rick Wion, Director of Social Media at McDonald’s USA. Mark Ailsworth, Director of Midwest Sales at MaxPoint Interactive, will moderate the panel.

Kutchera will provide an overview of the recent Hispanic census results and research from his new book, “Latino Link: Building Brands Online with Hispanic Communities and Content.” Other topics include real-life case study examples about:

· How McDonald’s incorporate multicultural marketing into its social media efforts

· How AllState utilizes national event sponsorships targeting the Hispanic population, across all of its online marketing channels

· How Sears is reaching Spanish-speakers in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Internationally

“As an organization, it is our mission to provide members with information on the latest industry developments, best practices and key learnings that they can apply in their own organizations,” said Cary Goss, President of CIMA and Vice President, Sales, AdCurate. “This panel discussion will help online marketers understand what is required to create Hispanic market strategies that will resonate with this key group, and ultimately, help the company achieve sustainable success.”

Wedding, Death & ProStart

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media | No Comments

This past weekend while you were engrossed in the news about the Royal Wedding or the death of Bin Laden, Gossip Genie was in the midst of a historical event, the 10th Annual National ProStart Invitational in Overland Park Kansas. The National ProStart Invitational is composed of two distinct competitions: the culinary and management competitions. First-through fifth-place winning teams from each of the two events are awarded medals and scholarships to pursue a career in the restaurant and foodservice industry.

During our 2.5 day stay in Kansas we interviewed over 150 students – which you can watch here in the 73 videos we uploaded to YouTube. We were tweeting and facebooking in real time so everyone at home could follow their team’s progress. We snapped 380 pictures which you can see on the ProStart Facebook page and flooded Twitter with over 500 tweets & retweets all with the hashtag #ProStart. It was a very exciting weekend and through our Facebook application Livestream, everyone at home could watch the awards ceremony and hear the winners announced at the same time as everyone present at the event.  Social media gave a presence to the people who could not attend but very much wanted to be there. Through our extensive documentation, the 10th Annual National ProStart Invitational will be an event that lasts well beyond May 1, 2011.

Congrats to the winning team, California (Newport High School) and everyone else involved.Gossip Genies at the end of our weekend trip – *note this was required attire

In a Relationship with Cloud Girlfriend

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media | No Comments

I recently read that a new dating site has been launched known as “Cloud Girlfriend.” If you aren’t up to date, let me explain.

The website’s initial idea was to allow males to sign up, create their perfect girlfriend, and have her (someone who works at Cloud Girlfriend?)  interact with him on his Facebook wall in order to demonstrate his popularity and success with women. Probably a good thing the creator, David Fuhriman, changed his original plan because this sounds strangely similar to the movie “Catfish” in which Ariel, 20-something male photographer from New York, and Abby, an 8 year old from rural Michigan, connect via Facebook. Ariel gets to know Abby’s entire family, including her older sister whom he fancies, only to find out the entire relationship, as well as the family’s facebook pages, was a huge hoax.

Cloud Girlfriend’s tagline states, “The best way to get a girlfriend is to already have one”. Basically, you sign up, choose a picture from a selection of faces, fill out your profile, and begin chatting away with other fake profiles as if it was your real girlfriend or boyfriend. Fuhriman says, “It can help in learning how to manage a real relationship, and they then can take it into the real world.” Okay true…or for those who have never had a real relationship, it could blur the lines between reality and fiction. It seems as though we are taking the use of social media and online dating to a whole other level.
