Did you notice that the hashtag #PutYourPhoneDownAnd is trending on Twitter today? As a person who often advocates for unplugging and putting your phone away whenever possible, I absolutely love the sentiment! I even participated in the conversation on one of our client’s Twitter channels.

At Gossip Genie, we recommend participating in trending conversations on Twitter when they are relevant for your brand. When done correctly, you can bring new eyes to your page and increase engagement and buzz. The key is knowing how and when to chime in.

When it comes to winning at social media strategy, there are a few departments you need to kill it in. Facebook ads, fan outreach, community management and of course: content.

If you really want to SLAY at social media, you have to learn what it takes to create truly successful content. Keep reading for the A,B,Cs to creating some amazing content strategy.

Great Visual: It’s all about the aesthetic when it comes to posting on social media. Your goal is to get a pair of eyes to lock onto your post. How do you accomplish this goal? Catchy Copy: According to Fast Company, the ideal length of a Facebook post is 40 characters or less. Try to avoid writing paragraphs because your audience is not going to read it. We live in a society where we keep scrolling, so if your copy isn’t short and catchy, that will not appeal to your followers. Restore Hair rocks the method of quick and fun copy. 

 

Knowing your Audience: Every business has a certain audience they cater to. When it comes to social media, you want to make sure the material you’re posting makes sense to the audience you’re serving it to. A brand that totally understands this is Naot Footwear. It’s been just over a month since our last social media news update. And, lo and behold, the landscape has changed once again. We all know the beauty of social media is the fact that it’s never the same for long. That’s what makes the job of a social media manager interesting, but it can also make it totally frustrating.

In order to combat the frustrations that come along with the changes we see on an almost daily basis, we have to stay up to date on what’s happening in the social world and adapt ASAP.

Instagram stories continues to roll out new features for their biggest players. Now any account with over 10K followers can include a link for users to “swipe up” and read more. This function is used primarily for e-commerce, but bloggers are also using it to showcase their latest blog.

Another Instagram story update, users can increase their stories’ reach through hashtags and location tagging. This would be perfect for conferences, BTS shots, and brand-sponsored events.

3 Reasons Why Your Company Should be Active on Social

Missed Connections: You, an inactive brand on all social media platforms.

Me, a social media guru trying to help out.

Your brand has a Facebook page, a Twitter account, and an Instagram. But you haven’t posted new content in 6 weeks. Your Twitter feed consists solely of retweets, and your Instagram following to follower ratio is 2:1. All of these are red flags for a millennial consumer.

We’ve come to a point in marketing where social media needs to be a part of your overarching strategy. It just does. And it needs to be done by a professional.

Just because the 19-year-old college sophomore has been active on the above platforms for years, does not mean they should be managing your brand’s social media presence in exchange for college credit. You will be disappointed. That, I can guarantee.

If you realize you should be on social media (i.e. you made the accounts), but you’re not convinced you should be active (when I say active, I mean posting at least 3x/week, interacting with your current fan base, and actively reaching out to new fans), then please read the following. I think you’ll change your mind.

1. Customer Service

I think customer service is one of the strongest arguments I can make for your brand to be active on social. It’s natural for users to reach out via Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook when they have a question about your brand/service/product. They’ll ask questions like:

  • “Are you going to be at X event?”
  • “My package is damaged, what do I do now?”
  • “Is this paleo?”
  • “Where can I buy your product?”

And if you have a page, but aren’t active, they’ll never receive a response from you! That’s a missed sale and a missed connection. This will only tarnish your brand in their mind. Trust me. Active social media means responsive social media, and for that, you need a team to help out because we all know you already have enough on your plate.

2. Staying Top of Mind

There are so many brands. There are so many services. There are so many products. It’s a cluttered world out there, and as a company, you need to stay top of mind for the consumer. It’s hard to prove an ROI for social. But think about your own behavior, and how social media might influence your purchasing behavior.

Just last week I was skimming through my personal Instagram feed and I saw Peet’s Coffee had posted about a happy hour special they’re hosting every Friday throughout the summer. I usually go to Dunkin for my afternoon fix, but a BOGO deal means I’ll walk the extra five minutes to Peet’s and save some money. Now Peet’s has me hooked for the entire summer! If that’s not a social media marketing win, I don’t know what is.

3. Telling Your Brand Story

It’s human nature to build emotional connections. Even with a brand. Does your brand sponsor a charity event? Are you passionate about promoting a healthy living? Or are you simply a conduit for good times? The story of your brand and what your company stands for should be told on social.

Social media provides a space for brands to create authentic, human connections in a simple way. There’s no easier, more cost-effective way to spread your story and your beliefs than social media.

 

You’ve set up the pages. Now it’s time to nurture them. Grow your audience, make connections, and engage. You probably don’t have time to do that, but we do.

What makes a good Community Manager?

  • Building a voice and staying consistent

Do you want to sound perky and positive? Sarcastic? Professional? Pick a voice that will match your brand and keep it consistent.

  •  Answering questions or comments in a timely manner

If I am a customer that wants to express how much I love or hate a product on your Facebook page, I want to be heard. I am expressing it for a reason. Community managers should answer these promptly. Whether if it’s a Like, a comment, or both – show your customer that you care.

  • Post relevant content on your brand’s pages

If you’re a soup factory and you post an article about the latest Coachella fashion trends, that will not only look silly on your page but it also just doesn’t make sense! Even though Coachella is something trending at the moment, that doesn’t mean you should post about it. If you’re a soup factory, post a mixture of promotional content and articles that relate to enjoying a cup of soup!

Being a Genie Just Got 2x Sweeter

Time flies when you’re having fun! As cliché as it sounds, this is genuinely how I feel about my time at Gossip Genie. As of this month, I have now been here for two (yep, count ‘em!) whole years. Two offices, two job titles, two annual Cubs games, two (beautiful) Libermans, and ‘two’ many Happy Hours to remember later, I have experienced so much good during my Genie days.

Anybody who knows me well (even people who don’t know me well, honestly – I’m talking high school acquaintances and friends of friends) is well aware of the fact that I love my job. I talk about it constantly in-person and online because I’m fortunate enough to enjoy what I do day in and day out. Over the years, I’ve picked up quite a few life lessons that are going to stick with me for the long haul.

Practice What You Preach

Social media builds your brand. Social media keeps you connected. Social media is a game-changer.

These are all things I tell my clients, and all things I truly believe. During my two years, I’ve seen what social media is capable of. For big and small goals alike, social is a roadmap to achieving them successfully.

Because I know how powerful of a tool it is, I take my personal social seriously. I started building my reputation on LinkedIn by sharing valuable content and making meaningful connections (you yourself are a brand too, you know!), and I’m dabbling with the idea of starting a blog of my own as a creative outlet. I stay up-to-date on the exciting happenings in the lives of my friends and family on Facebook and constantly check Twitter for the day’s trending news stories (pro tip: find the latest Chicago news, national news, and social media news in my Lists – @kristinaknap).

Never Stop Learning

Ahhh, I cannot express how much I have learned to roll with the punches over the past two years!

Social media is the most wonderfully and infuriatingly dynamic industry there is. Right when I really know how to work a platform’s algorithm or rock a blog post, guidelines and rules change at the drop of a hat. While this sounds exhausting, it’s also one of my very favorite parts of my job. It means I constantly have new things to learn, new puzzles to crack, and new hacks to figure out – so long boredom!

As Gossip Genie grows, so does our list of services. Since I’ve been here, we’ve added four more snazzy options to our bag of tricks: photography, videography, blogger outreach, and social media audits. I LOVE having not only the opportunity but the encouragement to be involved in this. It keeps me on my toes!

The Gossip Genie team is such a stone-cold pack of weirdos, and I could not be more proud (a Bridesmaids quote in this post was inevitable)!

No, on a very serious note, the people I have the honor of working with every day are a major, major reason that I love my job so much. We are constantly building each other up and pushing each other to reach our full potential. We never stop laughing and make time to hang out outside of the office. All of these factors make for one kickass and unique work environment! I can’t express how refreshing it is to work with people who just.. get it. They understand work-life balance and are always ready to pick you up when you’re down.

Adventure Is Out There

New experiences are the spice of life and at GG, I always have plenty of them! Whether it’s flying off to New York to live cover an event or volunteering with Chicago Cares, GG has provided me with countless opportunities to immerse myself into a brand new adventure.

This holds true in my everyday life too. Sometimes the answer to life’s biggest challenges is just to dive in and take them head on! This past year has been a huge year for me. I got engaged to the most wonderful person in the world, moved out of my childhood home, crossed adopting a shelter dog off my bucket list, invested in a little, blue car, and am becoming a very proud aunt and godmother this month! While navigating all of these major life changes at once is pretty scary, I feel much more comfortable knowing I have such a wonderful support system – in and out of the office.

Be The Best Version of Yourself

Potentially the most important thing I’ve learned from Gossip Genie is to never settle.

Professionally, dreams don’t work unless you do – this is something I’ve taken to heart. It reminds me to keep striving for more and to never cap the ceiling on what I can accomplish with ambition, elbow grease, and a little help from my coworkers. Personally, a motto that always sticks with me is ‘I will live my life sincerely.’ In order to live a life you’re proud of requires becoming a person you’re proud of so never stop working on you.

Genies Bring the Buzz to Vision Expo

Another year, another Vision Expo! The International Vision Expo is a tradeshow for the eyecare and eyewear industries, displaying the latest in fashion, technology, and education. It is held twice a year in New York and Las Vegas and the Gossip Genie crew headed to New York this month to live cover Vision Expo East 2017. While at Vision Expo East, our team had the chance to display our wide array of talents, including live social media coverage, photography, videography, and consumer press/influencer outreach.

Vision Expo East had an expanded presence this year, with 714 exhibitors spanning 270,326 square feet of expo space, fashion shows highlighting the latest eyewear trends, and over 320 hours of education sessions. Needless to say, the Gossip Genie team had their work cut out for them!

Here’s how we used our talents to increase the engagement and reach of Vision Expo East 2017:

Social Media

We used social media to highlight all of the amazing eyewear and technology on display at Vision Expo East. Through live Twitter updates, Facebook Live video, Snapchat, and Instagram updates and Stories, social media posts reached over 3.2 million people during the show with over 9,000 engagements.

Video continues to be a huge source of engagement on social media and we incorporated video into our strategy through the use of Facebook Live, including live streaming the fashion shows that were emceed by celebrity host Jill Martin of the Today Show. Videos during the show had over 11,700 views.

Kristina designed custom Snpachat filters for the show, which were used 38,600 times, and did an incredible job highlighting the fun, unique aspects of the show floor through Instagram story updates.

Photography + Videography

Our photo/video team took 3,872 photos and over 1200 video clips during Vision Expo East! Taryn did an amazing job capturing the energy and excitement of the show through her photography talent. Here’s a look at some of the incredible photos she took:

Keenan, our resident videographer, was tasked with capturing everything from attendee and exhibitor interviews, show floor b-roll, education sessions, and even filming a “day in the life” of Iris and Seymour, the eyeball mascots for Vision Expo sponsor Think About Your Eyes. He continually came up with creative ways to showcase the show. Stay tuned for the results!

The photos and videos taken during the show will be used for our social media posts and ads for future shows to help drive registration and attendance.

Consumer PR/ Influencer Outreach + Press Event

A great way to increase the reach and engagement for an event is to have influential bloggers and press attend. Anneliese knocked it out of the park with the social media influencer/blogger and press outreach she did for Vision Expo’s Press Preview, which was a major hit with 33 media attending, totaling over 12.7 million impressions. The Press Preview gave media an early preview at the hottest eyewear trends at Vision Expo East and media was also given a front row seat to the fashion shows. The latest eyewear and tech showcased at Vision Expo has already begun to hit the pages of leading magazine and social media influencers’ accounts! 3 Brand Accounts We Can All Learn From

Hi, all! Shannon here to bring some inspiration to your screen. I personally love all of the creative aspects of my role, but even though I truly enjoy writing, design, and photography, it’s still easy to find myself in a creative rut. So how do I get out of these ruts? I follow a lot of inspiring accounts on my personal Instagram. And I’ve got to tell you all, there are a lot of brands killing the social game. Here are 3 brands that I feel totally inspired by and why.

1. Jord Watches

The lesson we can all take from Jord Watches, is the importance of blogger outreach. Jord uses their blogger network to create a cohesive, and interesting content feed. It’s cohesive because they feature three photos (the number of images per row) from each blogger. This creates a similar feel within each row of their Instagram but also provides breadth to their content that will keep readers coming back for more. If your brand isn’t on the blogger outreach train, I recommend you consider it (P.S. we offer that service here at Gossip Genie). Blogger outreach is amazing. It encapsulates the ideation of “you scratch our back we’ll scratch yours.” Because when you build relationships with bloggers you are exposed to their network, and likewise they are exposed to yours (that means increased traffic for both parties). The bloggers also provide you with quality content that you can repurpose for your own channel, this makes your Instagram strategy both easy and impactful.

2. Marshalls

Can we all take a stab at what lesson can be learned from Marshall’s account? No? I’ll tell you, it’s continuity. Every photo in their feed looks like it belongs in their feed. The dark blue brand color appears somewhere within every photo, which makes their stream curated, but also entertaining. Because you, as the user, don’t know how Marshalls will incorporate that iconic color throughout their stream, but you know it’ll be there.

3. Halo Top

Last, but not least, is Halo Top. I personally love Halo Top’s account for two reasons. 1. They pull off brand partnerships flawlessly. Whether they’re partnering with pizza brands or personal charging devices, their content/contests don’t come off as forced. They know their brand so well that they can incorporate it alongside any other brand. Now that’s something to strive for. 2. Halo Top is always capitalizing on relevant events. In this snapshot alone you can see multiple March Madness references. That means your product stays relevant and keeps your brand at the top of your customers’ mind.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am passionate about photography. I was the kid who carried their Fischer Price camera around their neck everywhere and I even started my own photography business at 17. My side-hustle photography business is still going strong, and I actually initially met Jacqui because I photographed her family.

While I absolutely love working in social media, one of my favorite parts of the job is when I get to whip out my bulky, reliable Canon Mark II. Social media is innately visual, so eye-catching, high-resolution images are VITAL for platforms like Facebook and Instagram. In fact, 74% of social media marketers use visual assets in their social media marketing, ahead of blogs (68%) and videos (60%). That’s why we always recommend that clients utilize our photography services. I know that I’m biased, but I think we have a team of talented photographers and visual artists!
