5 Reasons It’s Good To Be A Genie

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Words of Advice | No Comments

As August begins, I am celebrating five years at Gossip Genie. Five years, twenty-five thousand emails, and countless conference calls later, I’m taking the time to reflect on what I love about my job and why I’ve invested half a decade of my life with Gossip Genie.

In the US, the average time spent at a single company is 4.6 years. But what makes a person stay with a company and invest in their career there? As I look back on the last five years, here are a few of my reasons why:

The Challenge

At the end of the day, I couldn’t be in a job or position that didn’t challenge me. I thrive on learning new things, challenging myself and others, and getting out of my comfort zone every once in awhile. Being at Gossip Genie and working in social media, I am never bored. There’s always a new challenge on the horizon, which makes my job exciting and, ultimately, worthwhile. Without a challenge, there is no reward.

The Clients

I have been very lucky to have worked with some amazing clients over the last five years. Working with entrepreneurs, marketing professionals, and CEOs from all different kinds of industries, I’ve gained insight into worlds I’ve never imagined and had the privilege of being a part of their story, even if just for a little bit. Our clients are what drive our business and I relish the opportunity to create lasting relationships with them.

The Culture

Flexibility, work/life balance, and an energized culture are paramount to a person’s decision to stay with a company and at Gossip Genie, I ‘m lucky to have all three with a work from home policy, fun company outings, and flexibility to balance my workload and my life.

Work That Matters

I’m not a doctor saving lives on a daily basis but I like the fact that the work I’m doing matters to my clients and their business. There’s a great deal of satisfaction knowing that you’re proud of the work you’re putting out there and that it is resonating with an audience.

The People

I am nothing without my Gossip Genie team. It’s great to work in a collaborative environment where everyone is marching towards the same goal. To my team: you motivate, inspire, and challenge me and I am lucky to not only call you colleagues but friends. And to Jacqui, our fearless leader, thank you for allowing me to be a part of the Gossip Genie journey.

Creative Resumes That Stand Out

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media, What's Trending | No Comments

When applying to jobs, you’re always looking for that special something that will help you stand out to potential employers. Whether it’s a perfectly worded cover letter or a creative resume design, you have to do something to stand out in the current job market.

Phillippe Dubost, a Paris-based product manager, upstaged us all by turning his resume into an Amazon.com product page and it’s gone viral, resulting in over 100 job offers from various companies.

Phillippe’s not the only one to get creative when it comes to applying to a job.

Eric Ghandi created his resume to look like Google-page. He uploaded it to his LinkedIn page and was contacted by Google directly about applying for a position.

Sabrina Saccoccio modeled her resume after a Facebook profile page.

She even included wall comments.

It’s a tough job market and people will do anything they can to stand out. But does it pay to be creative? I guess it depends on where you’re applying. Just as you wouldn’t wear jeans to an interview, your resume needs to match the part. But it never hurts to get creative. It could be the thing that sets you apart from everyone else!

What’s the most creative you’ve gotten with your resume or cover letter when applying for a job?

Defining Success

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media | No Comments

Success- what does it mean? It means different things to different people. Attaining an unpaid internship that requires you to retrieve coffee for your superiors could be considered a success. Being elected the president could be considered a success. If you stay married for 20 years most people would say that is a successful marriage. Success is all about how you view yourself. Everyone defines success a little differently. Success and happiness do not necessarily go hand in hand but I think if you figure out what your definition of success is, when you achieve it, you will be happy. Maybe being happy is your definition of success. Success to me is loving what I do because what I do is my livelihood. What I do is not just a job, it’s not something I view as a 9 – 5 commitment, it’s what I live and breathe. I believe that with that mentality comes success and happiness.

Don’t get me wrong, not every single day of my life is a social media carnival of rainbowlicious fun and excitement, there are days when I am exhausted and feeling uncreative but thankfully, I have a team to lean on during those days the planets don’t align for me. Success is also a product of believing in yourself. I am not trying to write a self-help blog but if you believe in what you do, it’s obvious. If you have ever heard me discuss what Gossip Genie can do for a company, I know you will see it because I feel it, it’s a an unparalleled energy, it’s passion.

In 2013, we plan to grow Gossip Genie quite a bit which means we plan to help businesses succeed through social media. Our goal is to increase revenue for our clients, it’s a bit different than your traditional marketing plan. Therefore, if you are interested in joining our team, please send your resume and cover letter to info@gossipgenie.com – remember to always PDF your resume. How NOT to Work at Gossip Genie

By | Gossip Genie Blog, Social Media | No Comments

I can hardly contain my excitement at the thought of my company, Gossip Genie, turning 2 years old next month. I did freelance work from May of 2009 until January 2010, at which point, I formed an LLC. Therefore, the official birthday is next month. It has been an incredible journey with ups and downs, like everything else. I can honestly say that there is nothing else I would rather be doing than this. I am so grateful for all of the wonderful clients we have and the amazing referral sources. Gossip Genie would not be where it is today without a great team in place. With exciting new business opportunities on the horizon and marketing tactics in place, we are thrilled to announce that we are hiring. Here comes the fun part…after posting the job information on Craigslist, the applications came flooding in.

A couple of recommendations for those of you looking for jobs – PDF your resume, that adds a little bit of professionalism to your response.

Open Table – THE RESERVATIONS WEBSITE IS NOT A “SPECIAL SKILL”

Don’t include “Salary requirements” in your resume:

I would omit this previous work experience…

What you did almost 17 years ago on Saturdays does not interest me!

The best is when people try to adapt their resumes to include their “social media skills” – it’s always at the end of the resume making it all the more obvious:

So the search continues – if you or anyone you know is interested in working at Gossip Genie, please send a resume and cover letter to Jacqui@GossipGenie.com
