On December 27th, Instagram accidentally released an update to more users than intended – and people were not happy about it. The app debuted a horizontal scroll à la Instagram stories to scroll through your feed, with the intention to eliminate idle scrolling. This meant that users had to tap through their feed to advance through posts, instead of the tried-and-true vertical scroll.
In order to “like” a photo, users had to tap the middle of the picture, tap either on the right or left of the image to view the next or previous photo, and swipe up to view comments. Additionally, there was a progress bar on top of the screen to show how far you were in the feed, similar to the stories feature.
This update incited panic among the users who were affected, and many users took to Twitter to express their frustration with the update.
Instagram literally went “felt cute but might delete later” #instagramupdate

Instagram was quick to address the issue and revert the app back to normal.
Due to a bug, some users saw a change to the way their feed appears today. We quickly fixed the issue and feed is back to normal. We apologize for any confusion.
