The video-sharing social network TikTok is finding new ways to keep users in the app for longer periods of time. The maximum length for video uploads has been expanded to 10 minutes in efforts to compete with YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram’s longform content.
With its massive popularity and explosive growth, TikTok is a worldwide phenomenon. The app, owned by a major Chinese tech company, ByteDance, has over 1 billion active monthly users around the globe. A TikTok spokesperson shared a statement about the new feature: “Last year, we introduced longer videos, giving our community more time to create and be entertained on TikTok. Today, we’re excited to start rolling out the ability to upload videos that are up to 10 minutes, which we hope would unleash even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world.”
How do users feel about this new feature?
While many users may be looking forward to the ability to share even more with their audiences, what’s the monetary incentive for TikTokkers to make their videos longer? When they join the Creator Fund, TikTok creators get compensated for their views and engagement. Because of this, many users prioritize quantity by putting out multiple shorter videos to maximize earnings. What will the value be for taking the time to put together a 10-minute-long video?
It also goes without saying that we’ve become extremely used to getting our entertainment and information as quickly and as easily as possible. Are our attention spans going to be held with 10 minute TikTok videos? Time will tell about the success of this new feature. Whether you’re creating videos or strictly watching them, are you looking forward to longer videos on TikTok?
