Losing numbers on social can be hard on your ego. Your recent decrease in Twitter followers and engagement may have raised a red flag. However, Twitter is responding and saying “It’s not you, it’s me.” Recently, Twitter cracked down on the number of fake accounts and bots that were on their platform. A reported 70 million accounts were eliminated from the social network in May and June combined.
The social purge took place almost literally in the middle of the night. Many people woke up to a drastic change in their follower count. One of the biggest challenges of social media is fake accounts and fake engagement. Twitter embarked on this deletion journey to fight the abuse and spam on their platform. Although it may sound scary, this new change is a good thing for Twitter users.
Still not convinced? Here are a few reasons why you should be.
1. Accurate Numbers
This new change allows for users to be able to accurately keep track of their following. For businesses, this is even better. Fake accounts and bots will no longer affect your social data or reports. You can take pride in knowing your numbers are more accurate.
2. Real Engagement
You are now able to find the people that want to interact and engage with your content. Before, it wasn’t clear what engagement was a bot programmed to like and comment on your posts and what was real. Now, you have the opportunity to genuinely connect with other users on the platform over shared interests.
3. Less Spam
We’ve all received strange direct messages or comments on our posts from random accounts. This elimination of fake accounts and bots will cut down on the chances of that happening anymore. Now, when someone sends you a message, you can worry less about it being a bot.
