As I enter into my third week here at Gossip Genie as our newest Social Media Manager, I can honestly say it’s been an amazing adventure so far and no doubt, my best ‘adult’ decision yet.

I knew joining the competitive world of marketing and social media would be challenging, but being immersed into Gossip Genie’s creative environment has already helped me grow and learn so much. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for my future here.

I may not be an expert in social media yet, although I’m getting there quite quickly thanks to my talented coworkers. However, I definitely have learned the qualities you need as an individual to learn and thrive in a position like this. I feel confident and excited in sharing my advice to those looking to enter or succeed in this demanding yet rewarding industry.

Here are 3 pieces of advice from an eager, open-minded Social Media Manager to an aspiring one:

1. Take the initiative

Your work environment should be a place where you’re able to learn and grow, and there’s no doubt that your coworkers and boss aren’t going to support that. However, they’re also not there to hold your hand through every step of the way. Taking the initiative is so important, I can’t stress it enough. Don’t get me wrong, asking questions is totally OK and you should always ask when needed! But, second guessing everything and needing constant guidance is not going to get you the results and respect you’re looking for. Taking on new tasks can be intimidating, but always be confident in your skills and what you know!

2. Collaborate with your team

As many of us already know, the best way to learn is from others! Always keep in mind that everyone has a new perspective on things and fresh ideas to bring to the table. Utilize your team when necessary and never be afraid to ask others for input!

3. Have fun with your work!

Even when you’re overwhelmed with work and demanding clients, never forget the perks and creativeness that comes along with your position. Social media is so fascinating, is evolving by the minute and is what makes this field so innovative and fun! Stay positive, have fun with your projects and work towards reaching your highest potential.
