Between the cold weather and the sun setting earlier and earlier, there’s nothing I want to do more in the evenings than curl up on my couch and rewatch Gilmore Girls for the 500th time. But, I’m trying to be more of an intellectual, so recently I’ve been swapping my remote for a good book. I decided to ask around the Gossip Genie office to see what books the other Genies are currently obsessed with and I’ve compiled them below.

If Oprah can have a book club, so can we.

The Harry Potter Series – Janelle

Read If: Honestly, this will probably be a good re-read for many of you, like it is for Janelle. Unless of course you also spent your childhood living under a staircase and never got a chance to enjoy this series in the 2000s.

Synopsis: It’s about a boy who is a wizard. I’m not exactly sure how else to summarize this entire series. Like, there’s eight books – I cannot summarize eight books in a few sentences. Just trust me – he’s a boy and he’s a wizard. If that’s not enough to entice you to read these, I don’t know what is.

“Well I’m currently reading one of the books & then watching the movie directly after I finish the book & it’s fun to find the inconsistencies. #NerdLife 🤓” – Janelle Prisner

Gone Girl – Ashleigh

Read If: Read this book if you love thrillers and hate being able to comfortably sleep at night.

Synopsis: Amy & Nick seem to have a picture-perfect marriage until one day Amy goes missing. Nick becomes the prime suspect in her disappearance and soon their image of a happy marriage begins to crumble. This book will make you question everything you ever thought you knew. Just kidding. But it is pretty crazy.

“Gone Girl was probs one of my favs because I love thrillers and I also thought it was a lot better than the movie (as usual) idk how much explanation ur looking for.” – Ashleigh Lalla

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo – Taryn

Read If: You love an empowering female protagonist who kicks ass and takes names.

Synopsis: Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo is now ready to tell the story of her seemingly glamorous life to reporter Monique Grant. Spoiler alert – it is wildThe Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo explores the psychology of Hollywood and the price of fame. Also, Evelyn Hugo gives me Elizabeth Taylor vibes so 10/10 recommend just for that.

Emotional Intelligence 2.0 – Lizz

Read If: This is a good book to read if you don’t like reading for fun. Just kidding. According to Lizz, this book offers a great deal of insightful self-reflection and allows you to further develop your EQ, or emotional intelligence (please tell me I’m not the only one who didn’t know what EQ was.)

Synopsis: This book was written with the sole purpose of increasing the reader’s EQ. Emotional Intelligence 2.0 is a step-by-step program for increasing your EQ which will enable you to achieve your fullest potential. In today’s modern world of competitive workplaces, this book will provide you with the tools you need to stand out from the rest.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark – Anthony

Read If: You never want to feel safe in the privacy of your own home ever again.

Synopsis: This is a true crime novel about the elusive Golden State Killer who terrorized the state of California for over a decade. That’s pretty much all I can tell you about this book. I tried reading this book myself and got to page 163 before it started scaring me too much and now it sits in the corner of my apartment, haunting me.

Hit Makers – Liz

Read If: You work in marketing or communications and want to further understand why things like the Yodeling Boy got so famous.

Synopsis: When something goes viral, it is never random. This book uncovers the psychology of why we like what we like (and what we don’t like) and how pop culture shapes our lives. I feel smarter already, don’t you?

All Over the Place – Violet

Read If: This is a good book to pick up if you’re constantly battling a travel bug but you have bills and responsibilities and two cats that no one ever wants to watch for you even though they’re really cute and like no work at all.

Synopsis: All Over the Place is like Eat, Pray, Love if Eat, Pray, Love was actually enjoyable to read. Geraldine is laid off from her corporate job and spends the next few years traveling the world -this book is a compilation of the stories she gathered along the way. The author is actually really funny too. Not in like a ‘Wow this is the funniest book I’ve ever read’ kinda way, but you will definitely chuckle a few times.
