If you’ve ever worked with me, you know that Mercury retrograde is something I strongly believe in. It occurs three to four times a year, and I can feel its effects in my day-to-day life– especially in the workplace. If you’re not familiar with the concept, it can be described as a time that Mercury appears to move in an opposite direction to planet Earth.

Typically, planets move from east to west around the sun, but according to the Mother Nature Network, when Mercury is in retrograde, “Mercury turns to move from west to east instead.” And while this backward movement is actually an illusion similar to the one you experience when you’re in a car on the highway moving faster than a train alongside you, “astrologers believe that during this time, it has an effect on life here on Earth, specifically within the realm of communication and technology.”

According to Almanac.com, “the planet Mercury rules communication, travel, contracts, automobiles, and such.” In my own experience, I notice Mercury retrograde getting in the way of work travel, email and phone connections and work communication in general.

In this retrograde, the Genies have experienced major glitches and delays. Despite the perfectly normal weather day, Anthony was delayed 4 hours for a ~24-hour work trip and when he deboarded his plane, he realized he left his wallet on board. Luckily, he got it back, but this is a prime example of Mercury making travel less than ideal! He also had to help a client with a website crash over the weekend.

Janelle and I tried setting up a new email address for our client to reach us and it took several tries for their emails to go through. Then when they tried to hop on our conference line later that day for a touch-base, our conference line went down. Coincidence? No– Mercury!

Violet was in a hurry to finish some work and both of the websites she needed to use suddenly crashed. Jacqui was on her way to work when a biker darted out in front of her car and she missed him by a centimeter. My laptop rebooted five times before turning on yesterday. Even as I write this post, I am having difficulties adding in photos! The list goes on of all of the mishaps and close calls that are truly out of the ordinary.

Our best advice to weather this Mercury retrograde is to stay calm, patient and give yourself extra time when traveling or using technology. Be sure to do things more slowly than you normally would so you have time to double and triple check that things are running smoothly. It’s important to also be extra clear when communicating with others because miscommunications happen often during this time. Most of all, exercise extra caution!
